Most backyards in Huntington Beach have the bones to be something really special. The mature landscaping, the open space, the mild weather year-round - it's all there. What's usually missing is a well-built outdoor structure that ties it all together and actually gives you a reason to be out there.
That's exactly what this build was about. We worked with redwood from top to bottom - the decking, the risers, the built-in bench seating. Redwood was the right call here. It handles moisture well, it resists warping, and that warm reddish-brown tone looks incredible against the greenery surrounding the space.
The layout had a few moving parts. There's a main lower deck that flows naturally from the existing concrete patio, then a stepped platform that rises up to surround the hot tub. We framed the steps with built-in deck lighting along the risers - low-profile square fixtures that add visibility at night without cluttering the look. The wrap-around bench at the top tier pulls the whole thing together and gives the space a real sense of purpose.
Details like the step lighting and the curved hot tub surround are what separate a solid deck from one that genuinely impresses. We take that stuff seriously on every build. This is the kind of outdoor space that holds up for years and looks better as the wood settles in.
